Spech of Racism

Kia ora my name is Memory and I am here to tell you about Racism. What is Racism?

Racism is when people are treated unfairly because of their skin colour or background.

This could be a joke, a word, or a question, as an example of calling a chinese person ching-chong or a maori person a hori. These are not ok.

Racism in New Zealand started with the British people who came on their ships and thought that their white skin colour was better than Maori brown skin. The British treated the Maori unfairly just because they were different.

How can you stop Racism? Share with your friends that it is not ok. Be kind to others who look different from you, support other cultures for different language weeks, even if it is not your language you can still Learn about the different cultures.

The Dawn raids are an example of the racism in New zealand.

In the 1970s the police targeted Pacific people at dawn and they       would Bang down doors, wake them up and start to shout at them. The police would rip them out of their bed even with the clothes that they had on like their Jammies. And if they saw a pacific person on the Streets they would grab them and like my pa he was picked up twice then he was put in jail. The Polynesian Panthers included Smoans, Tongans, Cook island and few Maori

It all started when the pacific people were encouraged by the New Zealand government to come to New zealand for jobs that other people didn’t want to do, they were given visas from the government. A visa Grants a person permission to enter, leave or stay in a country, so the government gave them an expiry date for how long they could stay here in nz.

Nga mihi and thank you for listening to my speech about racism
